The world is facing challenges, however optimism persists. A novel accolade originating at the interdisciplinary festival the Starmus festival aims to inspire people to make a difference.

This new Earth medal bearing Jane Goodall's name will honor in honour of the esteemed scientist and conservationist who passed away this year. It will recognise those who champion the natural world.

The Medal's Framework

The first recipients are slated for announcement during the Starmus VIII festival in the Canary Islands, scheduled from 17–22 October the coming year.

Reports indicate that Goodall, a former Starmus advisory board member, had supported the medal's establishment. “The idea behind this award, and Starmus being entrusted to oversee it, was Jane's wish,” a statement said. “She expressed she would like for this to occur. And I think because of the very special bond she had with the festival.”

“The Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will recognize sustainable programmes carried out to create a planet improved for all living beings and ecosystems and provide encouragement for the continuation that work,” commented a relative.

Structure and Vision

A co-founder of the festival noted that the medal – unveiled at a prestigious venue – would probably encompass various fields.

“It’s going to be inspired by the Stephen Hawking award for science communication that we created exactly 10 years ago,” he explained. Goodall was a recipient of that very medal.

Expressing concern about the future of the planet, one figure said, “Honestly, it’s very hard to maintain optimism. Present governance globally represents a war on science. So this significantly hampers collective action.”

“In truth, things don’t look particularly bright which means we need to begin to reflecting, with greater urgency about the consequences of our actions. And that’s not only climate change, but also the whole way that we treat our environment.”

Following an Example

Therefore, it was noted it was a good time to honor Goodall’s example. “It is believed that in bestowing the prize, the focus will be on this essential spirit of Jane’s – which made her foremost concern, to change the way we treat wildlife with which we share the planet.”

Another key issue currently involves the spread of false information. The central topic of next year’s festival will be “the pursuit of factual understanding”.

“It has become apparent that factual reality has become a subject of discussion where political interests are involved. And it’s an alarming trend,” he commented. “The climate science is a science; it is impossible to have any influence by political agendas in this field.”

Hope and Determination

The aspiration remains that this honor will inspire concrete steps. “The purpose is motivating others to participate and to care and to strive toward these goals, truly. Whether or not we feel hopeful, we must look at working the best we can,” it was added. “Accept the possibility of failure, yet we must have to work to achieve positive outcomes.”

A descendant engaged in conservation work expressed optimism that “with guidance and when empowered, humanity can be conscientious guardians of our planet”, citing the initiatives of a foundation which, among its other activities, assists young people become engaged locally, wildlife, and the natural world.

“As my late grandmother repeatedly emphasized, the choices we make each day are significant and it is up to us what type of impact we make,” it was stated. “We still have an opportunity and this medal will offer support and raise awareness about beneficial initiatives that are being undertaken.”
