Astronaut Shares Emotional Distress In the Wake of Deluge of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.

Months following fulfilling her dream, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the well-wishers whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.

She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had emerged from the flight, such as spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
