New research indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs should be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to original weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become starving," described an individual.
This challenge is worsened if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural changes.
