Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
